Col. Brian P. Annichiarico, Marine Corps Base Hawaii commanding officer, and Jacque Freeland, base emergency manager, are presented a certificate during an awards ceremony at the Pacific War Memorial here, Monday. “It’s my honor to speak on behalf of the National Weather Service and discuss theses programs,” said Mike Cantin, warning coordination meteorologist for the N.W.S. “Kailua and the base exceeded the requirements set by the NWS and it’s been wonderful to work with the people here. I think it’s proper to recognize the people here who put forth the extra work to make the communities safe.” MCB Hawaii and Kailua became federally certified as tsunami/storm ready communities after eight months of preparation since the tsunami that devastated Japan in 2011.
