Varner was awarded the citation for his part in the unit's extraordinarily heroic actions in armed conflict against the enemy while participating in Operation Moshtarak with the Marine Expeditionary Brigade in the Marjah district, Afghanistan, from Feb. 1 to Feb. 28, 2010.
