U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Edward Mertz (red marker), a communications chief with Charlie Company, 3rd Assault Amphibious Battalion currently attached to Combat Logistics Battalion 1 and 30-year-old native of San Antonio, taps out from an arm bar from Sgt. Blake K. Parrish, an assault amphibious vehicle operator with Charlie Company, 3rd AABn., and 22-year-old native of Indianapolis, Ind., before a match during a ground-fighting tournament here, March 10. The tournament included four weight classes: 164 pounds and below, 165-179 pounds, 180-199 pounds and 200 pounds and above. The tournament was one of several sporting events held by CLB-1 to boost morale and encourage friendly competition between its companies during their seven-month deployment to southern Helmand province.
