U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Burton Francisco, right, assistant adjutant general and commander, Michigan National Guard, speaks with U.S Air Force Tech. Sgt. Mark Williams, a native of Louisville, Ky., transportation mentor to the Armed Forces of Liberia, and U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. William Knarian, a native of Hamilton, Mich., and brigade operations adviser to the AFL, at Edward Benyah Kesselly Military Barracks during a visit to Operation Onward Liberty Feb. 12. Operation Onward Liberty is a group of approximately 50 U.S. military personnel who mentor and advise the Armed Forces of Liberia in order to develop a national military that is responsible, operationally capable, respectful of civilian authority and the rule of law and is a force for good among the Liberian people. While in Liberia, Francisco toured AFL bases, spoke with OOL members and attended a military ball in celebration of Liberia’s 55th annual Armed Forces Day. The Michigan National Guard plays a large role in the development of the AFL as part of the National Guard Bureau’s state partnership program.
