The Marine of the day is Staff Sgt. Joseph Jackson, 29, communications chief, Regimental Combat Team 6, from Sacramento, Calif. Jackson joined the Marine Corps in August 2000. He enlisted just because he wanted to get a little bit away from home. “I had nothing better to do and college wasn’t for me,” Jackson laughed. “I’ve had an eventful career. I’ve got a chance to experience a lot of the Marine Corps, and I continue to look forward to the future.” Jackson says his goals are simple but important. He wants to start a family and also pick up gunnery sergeant. He plans on staying in the Marines till he can retire but is unsure whether that will be at 20 years or longer. “After I hit my twenty, I’ll decide. If the Marine Corps is fruitful, I’ll continue. If not, then it may be time to move on,” Jackson said. “Right now I just want to enjoy my experiences, and get some more rank.” Besides earning rank, Jackson is going to school during his off time. His studies include computer programming and communication engineering. “I’m trying to complete a bachelor degree before I retire. I’ve almost got my associate’s degree, so it shouldn’t be too hard,” he said. During his free time in Afghanistan, Jackson likes to workout and talk to his wife. He occasionally plays video games and his favorite is Call of Duty, Black Ops. His favorite thing to do at home is spend time fixing up his white 2010 Camaro. He loves to outfit it and take it to car shows and is currently in an automobile club, Camaro South, Jacksonville chapter. “I’m a big car fan. The club I’m in has grown drastically. It has a lot of Marines. We like to go to shows and cruise,” Jackson said. “I love to spend time with my wife, just taking her out in the car and driving.” “I want to tell my wife, babe, I miss you, see you soon. I hope all is well and I love you,” Jackson said.
