The sign in front of the Veterans Affairs newest medical facility in Long Beach, Calif. Soltes was a civil affairs officer and doctor of optometry who was killed in action while rebuilding the medical infrastructure in Mosul, Iraq. The new blind rehabilitation center was named after Maj. Charles R. Soltes on Jan. 25, 2011.
