Sgt. Brian Slates helps Spc. Grace Castellanos prepare her 2001 tax return Jan. 23 at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., Tax Center. Slates, a former 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division cavalry scout whose ankle tendons were severely torn after a roadside bomb attack during his 2010 deployment to Iraq, now spends his days as a tax preparer at the JBLM Tax Center. Having spent the last 13 months assigned to the center due to his injuries, Slates now mentors fellow soldiers who were selected and trained to work at the center temporarily.
