IE SHIMA, Japan — Lance Cpl. John M. Romanik (left) and Lance Cpl. William C. Collins (right) lift the top of a car back after it was cut with the “jaws of life” tool during Ryukyu Warrior 12 on Ie Shima Dec. 6. Removing the hood of the vehicle is a technique used by the firefighters to extract the victim. Ryukyu Warrior is an annual exercise conducted on Ie Shima for units within 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. Romanik and Collins are both aircraft rescue firefighters with Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
