A U.S. soldier stands at attention while a mine resistant ambush protected vehicle passes by Dec. 18. Throughout a five-hour period of time, more than 100 vehicles across five convoys left Iraq and entered through the gate here. The last convoy that crossed the border signaled the end of the transition of troops and equipment from Iraq as Operation New Dawn came to a close. Despite the final battalion’s departure, the U.S. will continue to build and strengthen a mutually beneficial partnership with Iraq. Third Army facilitated the redeployment, repositioning and retrograde of more than 50,000 personnel, 28,000 pieces of rolling stock and 800,000 non-rolling items.
