Longest-serving airman retires after 46-plus years

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Alfred K. Flowers celebrated over 46 years of service to the military during a retirement ceremony, Nov. 16, at the Bolling Club, Washington, D.C. Flowers is the longest-serving active duty service member in the Air Force, and the longest-serving active-duty African-American in the long history of the Department of Defense. His enlistment came at the age of 17 when he had his first job as a warehouseman and decades later, finishing his career as the Air Force budget director at the Pentagon. Flowers retirement is effective Jan. 1, 2012, three days after his 64th birthday.
