Tech Sgt. Eliza Villa of Fresno, Calif., a medic with the 144th Fighter Wing, California Air National Guard (red helmet), and Pfc. Giovanny Guzman of Walnut Creek, Calif., a combat engineer with the 235th Engineer Company, 579th Engineer Battalion, 49th Military Police Brigade, California Army National Guard, lead victims who are able to walk from the simulated disaster site to a decontamination area during the 2011 Arizona Vigilant Guard Exercise Nov. 4, in Phoenix. More than 500 California National Guard soldiers and airmen assisted in the statewide exercise, which included 250 agencies and prepared both the 49th Military Police Brigade to assume the role as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IX military disaster coordinator, or Homeland Response Force asset and Arizona’s plans for responding to a large-scale disaster.
