The exercise is designed to enhance the California National Guard’s disaster response capabilities to devastating state emergencies such as an improvised nuclear device detonation. Vigilant Guard is preparing the 49th Military Police Brigade to assume the role as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IX military disaster coordinator, or Homeland Response Force asset.
