Spc. John Chase sits in a chair as he undergoes kidney dialysis treatment Sept. 23 at the Aurora Dialysis Clinic, Grand Forks, N.D., as Sgt. Francisco Raatz looks on. Both men are members of the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, of the North Dakota Army National Guard, and Raatz is just days away from donating a kidney to Chase during a transplant surgery at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, N.D. The soldiers have served together in the National Guard for several years, including two deployments to Afghanistan, most recently in 2010. Chase returned home early from that deployment when both of his kidneys were failing.
