First Lt. Jeffrey Parks, platoon commander, Route Clearance Company, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, is congratulated by Marines after being awarded the Bronze Star with combat distinguishing device, Aug. 8. Parks was awarded the medal for his actions when his platoon came under attack from mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. Park ran up an exposed hillside under enemy fire to direct his grenadier to mark the enemy positions, then moved back to his vehicle and coordinated artillery and close-air support to neutralize the enemy.
