Staff Sgt. Juan Estrada, platoon guide, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, receives his Bronze Star with combat distinguishing device from Lt. Col. Andrew Niebel, battalion commander, 1st CEB, during an awards ceremony, Aug. 8. One of his notable actions during the deployment occurred when he witnessed a vehicle roll into a 10-foot-deep canal. Estrada leapt into the water and found the turret gunner trapped under the icy water. He freed the Marine, saving him from drowning, then remained behind to retrieve weapons, radios and desperately needed supplies.
