The sound of artillery: Infantryman fills important position in cannon crew

Spc. Erik Holmes, an infantryman assigned to A Battery, 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, uses a compass to lay a guide strap during the cannon crew members' recertification at Camp Ramadi, Iraq, July 31. The strap directs the Humvee, so that the Howitzer it is towing is pointed in the right direction before it is unhitched. Despite being an infantryman, Holmes is a member of the crew and is the first man on the scene to secure the area and call the guns in. All 16 crews in the battalion must recertify every six months to keep their skills sharp and, if necessary, protect the compound. Originally from Cobleskill, N.Y., this was Holmes' first certification.
