Temporary housing those who were affected by the devasting May 22 tornado in Joplin, Mo., will be placed on fields just south of Joplin Regional Airport. The U.S. Corps of Engineers has completed the design and awarded contracts for two of these sites that can accommodate up to 346 manufactured homes. These community sites will include development of temporary gravel pads for housing foundations, emergency storm shelters, bus shelters, mailbox units, gravel and asphalt roadways and all utilities related to the infrastructure of the community, to includ a sewer and waterline installation. The Corps envisions creating a community with an environment where people can live, not just sleep. Following a natural disaster or emergency, the Corps can manage the installation of temporary housing for FEMA as part of the federal government's unified national response. Temporary housing missions can be wide ranging and may include technical assistance to FEMA and/or their contractors, placing pre-fabricated units on private property or exisiting mobile home parks, as well as design and construction of new group mobile home sites, to include necessary infrastructure and placement of units. The Corps has six Temporary Housing Plannning and Response Teams at districts around the country that are ready to deploy in response to natural or man-made disasters. These teams are located in New York, Alabama, West Virginia, Florida, California and Minnesota.
