Massachusetts National Guard soldiers from the 26th “Yankee” Brigade and 1-181 Infantry Battalion held a Memorial Day service here today, to honor their fallen brothers and sisters. Soldiers from both companies spoke about fallen heroes and the duty of all Americans to honor the sacrifice made in the defense of freedom “today we … remember all service members who fell in the name of freedom,” said Sgt. Greg Mcavoy, from the 1-181 Infantry Battalion. For members of the 1-181 and 26th, this Memorial Day brings memories of fellow soldiers lost during this and previous deployments “I see the faces of the fallen. I see Pfc. David Jefferson, Spc. Matthew Pollini, and Spc. Morganne McBeth. All soldiers I knew or knew of. All Soldiers from the same generation as me,” said Spc. Jessie Murray, an MWR specialist with the 26th “Yankee” Brigade. “They gave up a lot, and ultimately sacrificed the most sacred thing of all: their life,” she added. Although Memorial Day can be a somber occasion, soldiers spirits remain high. “Thank you for being here to celebrate the lives and legacy of our fallen heroes. They are no longer with us, but will never be forgotten, and will always be revered,” said Murray.
