Fort Leonard Wood has enjoyed the performances of Our Hula Ohana dance group for many years. This year marks the eighth year of performances by Our Hula Ohana during Asian Pacific American Heritage month observances at Fort Leonard Wood. Our Hula Ohana is a non-profit organization that performs at retirements, graduations, and other celebrations. The group is also active in community work with organizations such as Relay for Life, and Genesis House for battered women. The group is directed by Dina Burkett and practices twice a week in the Burkett home, especially in winter months. In summer the group rehearses outdoors. Burkett said that all of the group’s costumes are handmade. The group relies on fundraisers and donations so that they can hand sew their own costumes, and whenever they get a chance to go back home or to Hawaii, they like to get flowers and other accessories to enrich the presentation.
