Hawaii Marines hit ground in Helmand

GARMSIR DISTRICT, Helmand Province, Afghanistan — Cpl. Julian Herman directs his patrol to walk on one side of the bridge during a joint patrol conducted by Marines from 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment and 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, April 26. Herman, a native of Pittsfield, Mass., is a squad leader with the Guard Force Platoon, Hotel Company, 1/3, and is among the 1/3 Marines assuming security responsibilities of the Garmsir District from 2/1.
The incoming battalion, based out of Hawaii, will be supporting Regimental Combat Team 1 while partnering with the Afghan national security forces and Afghanistan to conduct counterinsurgency operations to secure the Afghan people, defeat insurgent forces, and enable ANSF assumption of security responsibilities in the region. Ultimately, the partnered forces promote the expansion of stability, development and legitimate governance.
