'Vanguard' Battalion bids farewell to senior leader during change of responsibility

1st Sgt. James Carroll, left, the outgoing first sergeant of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center and an Athens, Ala., native, stands with Capt. Jacob Jeffers, center, commander of HHC, 1st Bn., 18th Inf. Regt. and a Ripplemead, Va., native, and 1st Sgt. Jimmy Turbeville (right), the incoming first sergeant of HHC, 1st Bn., 18th Inf. Regt. and a Junction City, Kan., native, during the change of responsibility ceremony, March 28, at Camp Taji, Iraq. The change of responsibility ceremony is steeped in military tradition, and serves the dual function of rendering honors to the departing first sergeant and providing official recognition of the transfer of authority as the company’s senior non-commissioned officer to the incoming first sergeant.
