Florida's first African American Guardsman continues service in community

James S. Bryant (left) and his grandson Douglas Bryant, both of Jacksonville, stand outside the former Maxwell C. Synder Armory on the corner of Market and State Streets. James S. Bryant became the first African American to enlist in the Florida National Guard in 1963 and his grandson currently serves in the Florida National Guard.
