‘Gunfighters’ ready for quick draw during troops in contact response

Alvarez was wounded about two months ago conducting an emergency resupply mission for special operations Marines. Alvarez was offered a chance to leave Afghanistan after he was wounded, but refused. Instead, he chose to remain with his unit and fellow Marines for the duration of HMLA-369's deployment.
  • Pilots with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), fire a 2.75-inch rocket from a rocket pod on their UH-1Y Huey while training on a range outside Camp Bastion, Sept. 3. The Marines made the range run after completing an aerial reconnaissance mission for 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines in Southern Helmand province. HMLA-369 also provided overwatch for 3/1 while the unit moved through a populated area.
  • Marines with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), prepare an M134 minigun on a UH-1Y Huey June 16 before the Huey crew heads out on a combat assault support mission to provide eyes in the skies for a ground unit in the area. HMLA-369 Marines provide CAS, overwatch and assault support when troops are in contact with the enemy on a daily basis in southern Afghanistan.
  • Cpl. Carson Ferraro, a UH-1Y Huey crew chief with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), mans a .50-caliber door gun while flying an aerial reconnaissance mission in support of 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, Sept. 3. Ferraro and his crew visited a firing range after the mission to practice firing the helo's weapon systems.
