Lofted Communications

Sgt. Matthew Despotes, squad leader, and Lance Cpl. Johnny Ramirez, radio operator, both with 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit's command element, prepare to launch the lofted communications balloon from the port side elevator of USS Kearsarge, Oct. 15, 2010. The 26th MEU Marines first experimented with the lofted communications system during their 2008 deployment and have continued training with the system during their 2010 predeployment training period and deployment. The lofted communications system can extend the range of Marine Corps radio transmissions by hundreds of miles. The 26th MEU is currently embarked aboard the ships of Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group operating in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
