Coast Guard members from various commands in the Hampton Roads area teamed up to raise money and ride in the Hampton Roads Tour de Cure cycling event near the North Carolina, Virginia border April 17. The tour is a series of fundraising cycling events held in 43 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association. The Coast Guard team members were able to raise $4,345 and most of them rode the 100 mile Century Route. The team, from left, included Lt. Cmdr. Peter Jones, Petty Officer 1st Class Jeremy Stephens, Petty Officer 1st Class Gene Ward, Emily Bond, Petty Officer 1st Class Matt Wolanzyk, Cmdr. George Bonner, Cmdr. Bill Lane, Chief Petty Officer Richard Young and Petty Officer 2nd Class Cameron Washburn. Team members came from commands in Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Elizabeth City, N.C. According to the tour's website, the tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. In 2009, more than 40,000 cyclists in 80 tour events raised nearly $17 million to support the mission of the ADA: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
