Command Sgt. Maj. Gilbert Canuela, Fires Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, and Sgt. 1st Class James Herron, 324th Network Support Battalion, Fires Bde., pose outside Brigade Headquarters at the end of the Baghdad Bataan Memorial Death March May 20. Both Soldiers had family members in the original march through the Filipino jungle after American and Filipino troops surrendered to the Japanese. Canuela's grandfather, Paulino Santos, a Filipino scout, was killed; Herron's father, Lawrence Weisdorfer, survived the 160 kilometer march and helped other prisoners by smuggling medical supplies.
