U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Avery Whitelightning, an infantryman with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, pens his autograph to a line of Latvian schoolchildren at a school in the rural town of Gulbene, Latvia, Nov. 12, 2014, as part of a community outreach. The soldiers, who conducted the joint interaction with Latvian soldiers, were met with great fanfare by the students, who had never seen U.S. service members before. The interaction was part of the U.S. Army Europe-led Operation Atlantic Resolve land force assurance training exercise taking place across Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to enhance multinational interoperability, strengthen relationships among allied militaries, contribute to regional stability and demonstrate U.S. commitment to NATO.
