Sgt. Jason May assigned to C Co. 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. and Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces Sgt. Maj. Mikie Kudou, NCO Association Chairman and the project coordinator participated in a local community engagement project in nearby Chitose, clearing debris and trash from approximately two miles of local highway just outside the base entrance, here, Oct. 23. The roadway cleanup project partnered 22 U.S. Soldiers from the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. with a dozen Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF), 11th Infantry Regiment, 7th Armor Division members. The Soldiers are participating in Orient Shield 14, an annual bi-lateral exercise which partners U.S. Army personnel with JGSDF members for field and staff training exercises, where they will share experiences and participate in combined light infantry, squad-level training to include urban assault, building clearing, lane training and situational training, Oct. 27 to Nov. 7.
