Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Lt. j.g. Sano, right, embarked aboard Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Stethem (DDG 63), attempts to locate a U.S. submarine during a submarine familiarization exercise as part of Surface Ship Anti-Submarine Warfare Readiness and Effectiveness Measure, an exercise focused on the assessment of JMSDF and U.S. Navy’s capability to conduct anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and assess ASW readiness and effectiveness. Stethem, assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, is forward deployed to the 7th Fleet area of operations supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
