Corporal Aaron Aranda, MV-22 crew chief with Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 22 (VMX-22), and a native of Norfolk, Va., scans the water below an MV-22 Osprey for a target during an operational test, July 14, 2014. The crew from VMX-22 tested the G-22 configuration of the Defensive Weapons System which utilizes the GAU-17 minigun mounted to the belly of the aircraft. VMX-22 is currently in direct support of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force South aboard the future amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) on her transit around South America. The America is the first of the America-class amphibious assault ships, which represents the Navy-Marine Corps’ emphasis on increasing the aviation capacity of future big-deck amphibious assault ships capable of accommodating the next generation rotary wing and V/STOL (vertical/ short takeoff and landing) aircraft such as the MV-22 Osprey and the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter.
