U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Matthew Neale, 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron metals technologist journeyman, welds a metal plate onto a toe bar, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., April 2, 2014. When tungsten inert gas welding, Neale holds the aluminum rod on the surface of the metal while simultaneously holding the electric torch approximately one fourth of an inch away from the aluminum to create an electric arc which melts the aluminum. Airmen who work in the 20th EMS metals technology shop use their welding skill set to support the 20th Maintenance Group which maintains the 20th Fighter Wing’s 88 F-16CJ Fighting Falcons.
