The South Carolina Army National Guard’s 2-151st Aviation, in partnership with the S.C. Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (SC-HART), conducted tree and nighttime water-based rescue training at McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Eastover, S.C., April 5, 2014. SC-Hart is a joint effort between the State Urban Search and Rescue Task Force and pilots and crew chiefs from the S.C. Army National Guard. The tree-rescue training scenario placed stranded individuals in a tree to escape rising flood waters. Rescuers were lowered from a hovering UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter at treetop level to the individuals where they were securely harnessed and then brought into the Black Hawk and out of harms way. Once darkness fell, training shifted to nighttime water-based training. Rescuers entered the water to save individuals who were either unable to swim to safety or who have been swept away by flood waters. These two training scenarios provide members of SC-HART with skills that allow them to respond at a moments notice in the event of hurricane, earthquake, flood or a stranded hiker.
