Hector Valadez, senior drill instructor for Platoon 3032, Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, tells his recruits March 1, 2014, what will be expected from them during training on Parris Island, S.C. Valadez, 28, from Frederick, Md., promised to train his recruits to the best of his ability and to not give up on them, even when the recruits may give up on themselves. Mike Company is scheduled to graduate May 23, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
