From 1972 to 1991, Waterhouse served as the first and only official artist-in-residence for the Marine Corps, painting more than 160 works depicting Marines and events throughout the Corps’ history. Waterhouse originally served in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. On Feb. 19, 1945, during World War II, he landed on the Japanese atoll of Iwo Jima where he was wounded. His funeral marked the 69th anniversary of that day. Waterhouse, 89, passed away Nov. 16, 2013 at his daughter and son-in-law’s home in Toms River, N.J. (Official Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt.
