Marcia Mote wears the newly awarded Navy Cross, during a ceremony aboard Camp Pendleton, Jan. 18, 2014. Her son, Staff Sgt. Sky R. Mote, an explosive ordnance disposal technician with 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, MARSOC, was killed in Afghanistan in 2012 when his team came under enemy fire from an Afghan uniformed police officer attacking from inside the tactical operations center. Mote, from El Dorado, Calif., exposed himself to a hail of gunfire to draw attention away from others, halting the shooter's pursuit of his comrades. He remained in the open and engaged the shooter until he fell mortally wounded.
