A rice pounding ceremony hosted by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Camp Zama was held Dec. 18 at the headquarters on Camp Zama. The annual traditional event included attendance from leaders from the JGSDF Camp Zama, and U.S. Army Japan and U.S. Army Garrison Japan, all of which are headquartered on Camp Zama. During the event, soldiers, JGSDF members and other Camp Zama community members took turns pounding clumps of sticky rice with a wooden mallet, turning it into "mochi," a popular type of rice cake that is widely eaten throughout Japan and holds special significance on the New Year holiday.
