Afghan National Army takes control of Forward Operating Base Shir Ghazay

Sergeant Justin Root, a squad leader serving with Bravo Company, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, greets Capt. Nazer Sayair, an Afghan National Army company commander, as the Marines build a vehicle entrance gate to Forward Operating Base Shir Ghazay, Nov. 19. The base was transferred to the ANA and the Marines were retrograding equipment back to Camp Leatherneck. The base was established to provide security for Route Red. Route Red has been the primary transportation route for coalition forces and Afghan National Security Forces supporting FOBs throughout Helmand province. The FOB overlooks the re-supply route and maintains security in the immediate area. Root is a native of Topeka, Kansas.
