ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Rear Adm. Christopher Colvin, District 17 commander, presents Shirley Marquardt, Dutch Harbor mayor, with the Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award Friday, April 22, 2011, for her outstanding dedication and support to the Coast Guard by developing and implementing innovative risk reduction measures for vessel operations in the Aleutian Islands. Marquardt received the award for aiding safe, efficient, secure and environmentally sound maritime operations, including taking proactive measures to prevent maritime disasters by procuring a Dutch Harbor-based emergency towing system which became instrumental December 2010 when it was deployed on board the ocean-going tug Tor Viking II and used to tow the disabled 738-foot motor vessel Golden Seas away from Atka Island preventing a potential maritime disaster.
