HOUSTON -- The Airborne Real-time Cueing Hyperspectral Enhanced Reconnaissance system waits to be used aboard an Australian made Gippsland Aeronautics "Airvan" aircraft. The system, called ARCHER gives aerial reconnaissance, hyperspectral imaging capability to Civil Air Patrol planes. With it, an onboard computer linked to a sensitive HSI camera onboard can record a 1 X 500 meter area at 2,500 feet above the ground. It can detect and pinpoint any object on the ground then match the "spectral signature" against known samples. The HSI can be used in conjunction with CAP's existing satellite-transmitted digital imaging system to send images from the aircraft to the ground via e-mail and a satellite phone. The CAP's SDIS system can send such transmissions within two minutes -- allowing ground operators to redirect aircraft or deploy ground search teams as needed. (U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt.
