3/7 celebrates Marine Corps 238th birthday in Afghanistan

Gunnery Sgt. Joseph Shell, the Kilo Company gunnery sergeant serving with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, takes the first piece of cake during the 238th Marine Corps birthday ceremony at Forward Operating Base Shukvani, Helmand province, Afghanistan, Nov. 10. Shell, a 47-year-old native of Elizabethton, Tenn., was the oldest Marine present at the ceremony and as such traditionally receives the second piece of cake.
