Brian Kirkpatrick (right), then a corporal and combat engineer attached to "C" Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 24th Marine Amphibious Unit, shakes hands with President Ronald Reagan after returning home from peacekeeping operations in Lebanon. Kirkpatrick is a survivor of the 1983 Marine Barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon. On Oct. 23,1983, a suicide bomber driving a truck rammed into the barracks with 12,000 pounds of high explosives detonating one of the largest non-nuclear bombings in history.
