Japan Self Defense Forces (JSDF) Army Sgt. 1st Class Yasuyuki Iwashita and U.S. Army Sgt. Jeffrey Smith tests capability between JSDF Army field radio antennas and U.S. Army field radios at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, July 5, 2013. U.S. and Japanese service members met to develop an emergency communications system to use in the event of man-made or natural disasters. It ensures their respective service's radio equipment could communicate effectively and reliably with each other. Iwashita is a communications equipment specialist with the JSDF Deployment Air Force for Counter-Piracy Enforcement unit, a Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa coalition partner, and Smith is a retransmission team chief with 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment 2nd Armor Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
