Operation Rising Thunder, forward observer training

U.S. Army Sgt. Kenneth Chambers, a fire support noncommissioned officer with Alpha Company, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, marks mortar round impact locations on a map during Rising Thunder at the Yakima Training Center, Wash., Sept. 12, 2013. The mortar rounds were fired by soldiers with the 16th Infantry Regiment, Heavy Mortar Company, Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), in an effort to teach communication skills between U.S. and JGSDF soldiers. Rising Thunder is a U.S. Army-hosted exercise designed to build interoperability between I Corps, the 7th Infantry Division and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt.
