Lynette Rhodes’ grandfather, Frank Roland Robinson (back, second from left), played the sousaphone, or bass horn, in Norfolk’s iconic Excelsior Band. Robinson was a chemist assistant, who for 40 years, worked at the famous Royster Building, one of downtown Norfolk’s tallest buildings in 1912. The Excelsior Band, established in the 1890s, toured Hampton Roads, serenading captivated audiences. For generations, the Rhodes family has enjoyed a rich legacy of Norfolk community involvement.
