Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Sapna Mall, Platoon 4030, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, runs the last length of a 300-yard shuttle run, carrying 30-pound ammunition cans as part of her combat fitness test Aug. 27, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The CFT, which simulates a wide range of physical challenges one might face in combat, evaluates strength, stamina, agility and coordination. The test is a graduation requirement and an annual training event for all Marines. Mall, 18, from Yonkers, N.Y., is scheduled to graduate Sept. 13, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
