In almost ten years of service as a military member, Capt. William Spencer, chaplain, had the good fortune of spending every holiday season carving turkeys on Thanksgiving and opening gifts with his wife and children on Christmas Day. Every season, that is, except this one.

[19] Civil Service Road Crews in Salah ad Din As security continues to improve in Iraq, a word permeates throughout all operations in the region: transition. While touring Salah ad Din’s roads you cannot deny its progress: cleaner roads, improved Iraqi checkpoints and bustling marketplaces. [19] Effects of the Change-over from Echo, Juilet to Super Echo During my tenure as an instructor in Advance Individual Training, I served as an instructor who validated the Program of Instruction for the new Super Echo military occupational specialty. From this experience, one of the issues that I know will affect Soldiers from the changeover to Super Echo is increased length of training and the increased pieces of equipment each Soldier will train on. The Echo’s training was seven weeks long; the Juliet’s training was five weeks long. Now that the MOS has been consolidated, everyone’s training will be uniform, which benefits the Soldiers.

[19] We Give Thanks It has been a good month for the Outlaws. We celebrated Thanksgiving here with a good old fashioned football game. The first game kicked off with 3rd Platoon Renegades against 2nd Platoon, a.k.a. “The Dirty Deuce.” 3rd Platoon won the match and had a second game against Headquarters Platoon. This game defined 3rd Platoon as champions for turkey day. Then 2nd Platoon played Head Quarters and won with a three touchdown lead over the Dirty Deuce. Also, HQs learned that their star player was none other than the 1st Sgt. a.k.a. Richard “The Steam Roller” Seville. The old man dominated the field catching several passes and two touchdowns. Sgt. Nieves held the line allowing plenty of time for Pvt. 1st Class Chasteen to complete most of his important offensive plays. (01/5/09)
[19] 561st Combat Heavy Construction Company The 561st activated on Oct. 16, 2007, with only 22 Soldiers to begin the base of the Soldiers in the company which would grow to 165 in less than 60 days. As the First Sergeant the task was daunting, to say the least, but one of the biggest challenges was trying to fill the Company with the right MOSs. The Battalion CSM thinking ahead in February of 2007 had already seen that this would be a problem. He began requesting new Soldiers in preparation for deployment - 10 months out.

[19] Operation Humanitarian Assistance Mission
The Soldiers of 1st Platoon, 571st Sapper Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade woke early to prepare their vehicles for the mission that lay ahead. It would be a special day for the Soldiers of 1st Platoon, instead of their usual mission of route clearing, they were given the opportunity to interact with local Iraqis through a humanitarian assistance mission. These types of missions are favored by Soldiers because they get to practice their Arabic and interact with the locals in a positive way. The mission, named Operation Humanitarian Assistance Mission, delivered school supplies and other donated items to two local schools in dire need: Al Rega school and Tawan school. It was also a first combined operation between the Iraqi army and the 571st Sapper Company. It was an exciting and challenging mission; no one knew how gratifying it was going to be for the Soldiers of 1st Platoon.
