Major breakthrough in carbon material could have broad DOD applicationsNaval Postgraduate School (NPS) Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Claudia C. Luhrs, with collaborator Department of Physics Research Professor Jonathan Phillips and a team of student researchers, recently published the results of an ambitious research initiative designed to create carbon nano-fiber foams (CFF) – materials with the potential for multiple military and civilian applications.

Kacee Jossis, a shooter aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), verifies all the pre-flight checks have been completed and everyone on the flight deck is in position to commence flight operations. She looks up at an F/A-18F Super Hornet from the “Diamondbacks” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 102 and gives the signal to launch the aircraft.

NMCB 133 DET Guam Seabees participate in joint operations Silver Flag exerciseRecently, Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133, Detachment Guam, participated with U.S. Air Force Prime Base Engineer Emergency Force (BEEF) personnel in support of Exercise Silver Flag. While simulated attacks were made by the enemy forces from “West Aerok,” eight Seabees provided support to Charlie Airbase during the exercise which was held at Anderson Air Force Base, Guam.

Their joint efforts seek to build interoperability between the U.S. and Philippine militaries and to build capacity of the Philippines to respond to natural disasters.
