Coast Guard Research and Development Center, NOAA test Unmanned Aircraft System during Arctic exerciseSoaring high above the shifting ice and frigid waters of the Arctic Ocean, a silent sentinel patrolled the skies above the Coast Guard Cutter Healy during its journey to the Arctic this summer. While buoys and submersibles collected data from the briny deep, an Unmanned Aircraft System kept vigil in the frosty air.

Coast Guard dream becomes reality for youngest recruitThe Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter banked hard, flying around the last reported location of the distressed swimmer. The eyes of the helicopter crew were glued to the water, searching for any sign of splashing or movement. The crew's newest member, Isaac Simmons started pointing and yelling over the headset. "I see him! I see him," shouted Simmons as he spotted the distressed swimmer. "That's not what we say, what do we say Isaac?" asked Petty Officer 2nd Class Roderick Ansley, the crew's rescue swimmer. "Oh yeah, mark, mark, mark," exclaimed Simmons. Ansley was cutting Simmons a little slack as Isaac Simmons is only 7-years-old.

Coast Guard Research and Development Center conducts analysis of Remotely Operated Vehicles during Arctic missionBeing a multi-mission agency with a diverse range of responsibilities, the Coast Guard relies on a wide variety of technologies to do its job. The Coast Guard Research and Development Center evaluated the capabilities of many new technologies for Coast Guard use during its trip to the Arctic aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Healy this summer, but there was at least one device with which the Coast Guard was intimately familiar.

Coast Guard Research and Development Center deploys Unmanned Surface Vehicle during Arctic exerciseIn order to expand its presence and understanding of the Arctic, the Coast Guard and its partners evaluated the capabilities of a variety of technologies during the Coast Guard Research and Development Center’s journey aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Healy. Several unmanned systems were deployed into the air and below the waves of the ice-filled Arctic Ocean, but the RDC, along with their colleagues from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, weren’t about to forget the value of monitoring the ocean’s surface as well.

A lesson in boating safetyAdam was adrift and alone, hoping someone would find him soon. His situation proves that preparation is paramount when it comes to boating safety, as one wrong decision or one forgotten item can turn a routine fishing trip into a search and rescue case.
