MAIMANEH, Afghanistan – Throughout the Faryab Province of Afghanistan, soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 6th Field Artillery of the 10th Mountain Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team, work side by side with their Afghan National Security Force partners to bring improvements and security to the people of the districts.

The Afghan National Police in the Qaisar District, along with the 1st platoon of Alpha Battery, patrols and secures the villages of the district.

“Our mission is to partner with and train the ANP while conducting peacekeeping operations in the district,” said Capt. Stephen Ficchi, the platoon leader.

The platoon conducts various training for the roughly one hundred ANP in Qaisar.

“We conduct basic training with them like setting up traffic control points,” said Cpl. Brandon Woodrich, an artilleryman with 1st platoon.

Along with combat operations training, the platoon teaches the ANP procedural operations such as ordering essential supplies like fuel.

“We are a mentor team to the police chief and his staff,” Ficchi said.

With ANP vehicles in the convoy, 1st platoon conducts patrols throughout the district in order to maintain security. Also, the ANP are joined by Ficchi and his soldiers on overnight missions in the villages providing extra security for the locals.

“We go out there and try to secure certain areas that are controlled by the Taliban right now,” Woodrich said.

For most of the platoon this is not on their first combat deployment, however many of the soldiers have been able to find differences between their past and current experiences.

“I like it out there,” Woodrich said. “It’s not flat like Iraq. I like that we have to use the terrain and work around it.”

While at times a tough and tiring mission, the soldiers of 1st platoon enjoy the experience and camaraderie they share.

“We all like being out there doing what we signed up to do,” Ficchi said. “We all take pride in defending our country.”

First platoon, as well as the rest of A Battery, will continue to work closely with their ANP partners to provide aid and security for the people of the Qaisar District.
