Members of the GTMO Chief Petty Officers Association aboard Naval Station Guantanamo Bay began a project to restore memorials and monuments July 24.
Established in 1903, the Naval Station is the oldest U.S. Navy installation. Throughout its history, various memorials and monuments were erected honoring service members and civilians who served at the base.
Over the years, the GTMO climate degrades the base’s monuments and memorials.
“We thought it would be good to get out,” said Chief Master-at-Arms James L. Lloyd, attached to the NAVSTA GTMO Security Department, “Guantanamo Bay has tropical weather and tropical weather tends to affect things that are out in the open.”
“There are several memorials on the base,” said Lloyd, “We identified a few memorials for Marines who had lost their lives in the line of duty at GTMO. We also identified some memorials of historical significance throughout the base.”
For the CPOA members, the restoration project was very important.
“The CPOA wanted to get the senior enlisted together and show that we care about the base, we care about the past, and to show the community that we our out here as a group to take care of the base and to remember those who came before us,” said Lloyd.
The Chief Petty Officers Association is a social networking organization for senior enlisted service members at GTMO.
“We get together and it is a good forum for us to talk about issues that affect our commands,” Lloyd said. “We talk about professional challenges and how we can solve these issues within the Chief’s Mess. We also figure out how we can affect the base around us. It also gives us the ability to have fun as a group.”
The Association is open to senior enlisted leadership E-7 to E-9 from all branches of the military who serve on base.
“We have Army, we have Coast Guard, we have Marines, and we have Air Force senior leaders that are stationed here,” said Lloyd. "The senior leadership from the various services provides a wide base of knowledge and a prospective of what is going on at GTMO.”
